El Ghriba Synagogue (Djerba)
One of the oldest synagogues in the world, a major pilgrimage site.
History of the place
La Ghriba is a place steeped in history and spirituality. According to legend, it was founded over 2500 years ago by Jewish priests fleeing the destruction of Solomon's Temple. The current synagogue, although rebuilt, retains a unique atmosphere with its blue interiors, woodwork and its collection of Torah scrolls. Each year, it is the scene of a pilgrimage that brings together thousands of Jews from all over the world. Visiting La Ghriba means discovering an essential part of Tunisia's cultural and religious diversity.
