Archaeological site of Makthar
A vast and little-known Numidian and Roman site, witness to the historical wealth of northwestern Tunisia.
History of the place
Far from the crowds of Carthage or El Jem, Makthar (ancient Mactaris) offers a fascinating dive into history. Founded by the Numidians, the city prospered under the Roman Empire. The site is immense and remarkably preserved, with a triumphal arch, a forum, large baths, a basilica, and an astonishing 'Schola des Juvenes', a meeting place for a militia of young nobles. Walking among these majestic ruins, often alone, is a powerful and authentic experience.
