The Ribat of Monastir
An impressive Islamic fortress on the seafront.
History of the place
The Ribat of Monastir is one of the oldest and most important defensive works on the Maghreb coast. Founded in 796, it served as a lookout post against Byzantine incursions. Its watchtower (the 'nador') offers spectacular views of the city, the sea and the nearby Bourguiba mausoleum. The ribat also houses a small prayer room which is considered one of the oldest mosques in Africa. A filming location for many films, including 'Life of Brian' and 'Jesus of Nazareth', the site is a must-see in Monastir.
