History of the place

Chikli Island is a small floating treasure on the northern lake of Tunis. Classified as a nature reserve, it is a sanctuary for many species of migratory birds, especially pink flamingos. In the heart of the island stands the fort of Santiago, built by the Spanish in the 16th century on the foundations of an older citadel. Access to the island is highly regulated to protect its fragile ecosystem, but guided tours are organized at certain times of the year in collaboration with ecological associations. It is a unique getaway that combines history, ecology and bird watching at the gates of the capital.
