Roman caves of El Haouaria
Ancient stone quarries that plunge into the sea, at the tip of Cap Bon.
History of the place
At the extreme tip of Cap Bon, the caves of El Haouaria are a fascinating and little-known site. These huge underground quarries were exploited by the Carthaginians and then the Romans to extract the blocks of sandstone used for the construction of Carthage and other cities. The traces of the extraction are still visible on the walls. The site is spectacular, with its galleries that open directly onto the turquoise sea, creating natural pools of striking beauty. It is a place full of history, where nature and the work of man meet in a spectacular way.
