Chenini, the Berber village
A spectacular troglodyte village suspended on a mountainside, rich in Berber history and culture.
History of the place
Founded in the 12th century as a "ksar" (fortified granary), Chenini is one of the most impressive and best-preserved Berber villages in southern Tunisia. It served as an impregnable refuge against nomadic invasions. Its dwellings are carved directly into the rock, terraced up the hill to the crest, where the white mosque of the Seven Sleepers stands, a place of pilgrimage steeped in legends. Walking through its alleys is a journey back in time to touch an ancestral culture.
